Minnesota flies into Indianapolis on Tuesday one win from the No. 1 seed, and the only thing between the Lynx and home court through the Finals is a Fever team scratching for its own playoff footing.
The Lynx are 32-10, the best record in the league. Sunday they finally snapped a three-game skid, beating Connecticut 101-89, but they did not clinch the top seed — Minnesota still needs one more win or a Golden State loss to lock down home court throughout the postseason. Tuesday is the clincher sitting right there.
Do not mistake Indiana for an easy mark. The Fever are 27-15, coming off a 77-93 loss to Washington that dropped them behind Atlanta in the fight for the No. 4 seed and a home first-round series. They are playing for something, at home, and Gainbridge will be loud.
The matchups that decide it
Start with Olivia Miles against Caitlin Clark. Miles has run the Lynx all year at 19.7 points and 5.9 assists a night, and on Sunday she passed Clark’s WNBA rookie scoring record with her 770th point. Now she brings that into Clark’s building, against Clark herself (22.7 points, 8.4 assists). Whichever point guard pressures the ball and refuses to cough it up sets the tempo.
Then Napheesa Collier against Aliyah Boston. Collier is back to roughly 17.7 points and 7.3 rebounds since her July return and shooting it from deep on real volume; Boston (16.4 and 8.1) is the one Fever big who can bother her. That is the game inside.
The third one is the whole scouting report: Minnesota’s league-best defense against Kelsey Mitchell. Mitchell is scoring 25.1 a night on 51.5% shooting, the engine of everything Indiana does. Washington just held the Fever to 77 by making her work for every touch. Minnesota can do the same.
The storyline: Miles walks into Clark’s house
Track Miles here. She broke Clark’s rookie scoring record two nights ago and now plays in front of Clark’s home crowd, as the engine of the top seed rather than a rebuild. Her fourth-quarter composure Sunday didn’t read like a rookie’s. The Rookie of the Year race closed a while ago.
The thing that beats this Fever team
Slow it down and hold the ball. Indiana wants a track meet at Gainbridge; Minnesota’s defense strangles pace and guards without fouling. Win the turnover margin, let Collier and McBride hunt clean looks, and the Fever’s thin margin for error shows over 40 minutes.
What to watch
Watch the first quarter. If Minnesota treats this like a business trip and not a checkpoint, the clinch is academic by halftime. Clark carries her usual “probable” back tag; she’ll play.
Prediction: Lynx by 7, and the No. 1 seed comes home from Indiana. The Fever are playing for a seed; the Lynx are taking theirs.
